    • The Jewelry by Gauthiér store and residence occupies a 60' wide by 150' deep infill lot in Scottsdale's Marshall Way arts and shopping district. The challenge for this 8,800 sf project was twofold: to successfully re-interpret city zoning code and design guidelines that limited square footage, height and setbacks; and to re-invent the definition of indigenous "southwestern" architecture, creating a fresh addition to the area.

      The sculptural expression of the project is derived from a multitude of issues. Foremost was the client's desire to create a building that formally expresses the sculptural quality of his jewelry design. The knife-edged wing shape of the roof is not only like a jewel within a neutral frame, but a dramatic re-interpretation of the "stepped" forms traditionally derived from height setbacks. While carefully meeting the city's zoning height limitations and setback requirements, the form allows for access to the showroom's lighting and mechanical systems. The client's private collection and residence are expressed as a contrasting elliptical element that reveals itself both in the interior volume of the showroom, and in an unexpected, protruding form on the gallery's alley elevation. The material palette was chosen to complement the surrounding context, while addressing the sculptural forms of the structure. Integral colored plaster and stucco contrast with the acid etched, engine-turned bronze panels that clad the wing-shaped roof.
