Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA
- The Valley of the Sun YMCA facility was conceived to entice people driving by and once inside the front door reveal the building's programmatic components. The building's sculptural quality reflects the internal flexible volumes. Glazing is strategically located to mitigate the harsh sun, but allow views within the building from a variety of vantage points to begin the "sale" of the organization's mission. The building's components are wrapped around a small central courtyard that has a myriad of programmatic opportunities relative to other adjacent programs. Many of the spaces have operable glass walls which encourage indoor/outdoor activities when weather permits. Upon entering the building, one is greeted by a reception desk from which both staff and customer can see the myriad of activities within the facility. The circulation spaces are large enough for their own programmatic opportunities such as rock climbing, aerobic class queuing, off-site program registration queuing, and snack bar interface. Daylight is abundant throughout the facility, eliminating the need for electric lighting during the day.
