Communiversity at Surprise City Hall

Location: Surprise Arizona

Completion: 06/09

Size: 26,000 sf

The City of Surprise entered into a partnership with Maricopa Community Colleges to open part of its new City Hall complex as a campus for Rio Salado Community College. This partnership provides two- and four-year degree options. This is a creative approach to achieving the City’s vision of giving the community residents educational excellence without leaving their city. The project is a one-story, 26,000 sf“City of Surprise Communiversity–Center for Higher Educational Excellence.” Rio Salado uses the space for classrooms, lecture halls and other educational facilities, such as computer labs. The city administered the construction of the building, which was jointly planned by the City and the District. The agreement called for the city to be able to request access to the College space for city sponsored events. The College will own and maintain the building for at least five years, and the city expects to take ownership some time after that, depending on the need for city office space in the future.
