South Tempe Hardy Police Substation

Location: Tempe Arizona

Completion: 06/95

Size: 137,000 sf

Within the dynamic potential of a rapidly growing rural context, the conceptual genesis of a national trend towards community-based policing defined the need for this 29,000 sf police substation. This facility is a law enforcement model which encourages proactive public interaction with police personnel versus the dominant reactive paradigm. The concept is based on a two-pronged approach of sending police out into the community and, just as importantly, bringing the community into the police station.

All of this needed to be achieved while successfully combining three distinct components: police patrol, police training and public functions..
