Recognizing Imaginative Investigation + Creative Design
Celebrating 50 years, the Arizona component of The American Institute of Architects announced the winner of the 2009 Imagination Cube Competition, a competition showcasing imaginative investigation and creative design by creating a shade pavilion with materials from BEMO USA, the competition’s main sponsor. Luis Cruz-Martinez and Brie Smith were honored Saturday, September 26, 2009 at the Celebrate Architecture Gala in the Phoenix Convention Center for their project, “Stationary Movement or How I Learn to Stop Worrying and Love the Hyper Cube.”

Cruz-Martinez and Smith’s shade pavilion was required to fit within the cubic dimension of 48’ x 48’ x 48’ and must use BEMO USA’s suggested product as the primary component. Emphasis on demonstrating the experiential and Phenomenological qualities of “shade” were also required.

In addition to the Trophy Award and Certificate, the winners received a three night trip for two to Las Vegas Nevada with hotel and airfare included along with a travel stipend.

The award recipients were chosen by a jury consisting of Brett Oaks, AIA, AECOM, James Trahan, AIA, 180 Degrees, Inc. and Robert Strang, BEMO USA.

American Institute of Architects Awards Programs
The awards programs are an important part of the AIA’s tradition of recognizing the outstanding achievements of individuals and organizations in support of the profession of architecture. By informing the public on the breadth and value of architecture practice,
the entire profession is held in higher esteem.

The strength of the AIA’s awards programs lies in the diversity of the profession and the quality of the work submitted. AIA members can play a vital role by participating in the nominations process.
