The Arizona Science Center is kicking off construction on a new entrance and lobby that will make the downtown Phoenix venue more accessible.

The construction, financed by a 2006 city of Phoenix bond issue, will begin this week and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The Science Center’s new entrance and lobby will offer a larger, air-conditioned space. It also will include improved accessibility for patrons with disabilities and school groups.

During the first phase of construction, the Science Center will use temporary entrances and exits for both general public and school group access. Guests are encouraged to continue parking in the Heritage & Science Park garage located on the corner of Monroe and fifth streets.

Brycon Construction is the general contractor on the project and Architekton the architect. Kendle Design Collaborative, David Evans and Associates, Robert Morris Design Studio, Paragon Structural Engineering and Henderson Engineers are also working on the project.

“As one of the top cultural destinations in Arizona, these lobby improvements will allow us to better serve the more than 400,000 annual guests that visit the Science Center,” said Chevy Humphrey, president of Arizona Science Center, in a statement. “We would like to thank our visitors for their patience and understanding during these coming months of construction.”
