Nineteenth Annual Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards

The 19th Annual Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards honored its award winning buildings during a special awards banquet held Friday, October 15, 2010, at the Scottsdale Resort and Conference Center. The program honored 7 projects for outstanding masonry design, workmanship and creativity with the use of brick, block, or stone.
Gold Trowel Award Musical Instrument Museum Location: Phoenix Architect: RSP Architects with Rich Varda, FAIA, Tempe Structural Engineering Firm: Meyer Borgman Johnson, Tempe General Contractor: Ryan Companies US, Inc., Phoenix Major Masonry Suppliers: Superlite Block, Phoenix; Amsum & Ash/ Tab India, Minneapolis, Minnesota Masonry Contractor: Sun Valley Masonry, Phoenix
The awarded projects are selected by an out of state panel of jurors. This year's panel was from Salt Lake City, Utah. Brent Tippets with VCBO Architecture was the Jury Chairman and participated in the awards presentation on Friday night. An award is presented to the building owner, architectural firm, the structural engineering firm, general contractor, masonry supplier and masonry contractor for each winning project.
This year’s Gold Trowel winner (the top honor) is Musical Instrument Museum (MIM), located in Phoenix. The architectural firm for this project was RSP Architects with Rich Varda, FAIA in Tempe. The structural engineering firm was Meyer Borgman Johnson in Tempe. The general contractor was Ryan Companies US, Inc. in Phoenix. The masonry suppliers were Superlite Block in Phoenix and Amsum & Ash/ Tab India, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The masonry contractor was Sun Valley Masonry in Phoenix.

The Annual Excellence in Masonry Architectural Awards program is sponsored by the Arizona Masonry Guild, Inc. Established in 1958, the non-profit organization is celebrating 52 years of service to both the masonry industry and Arizonans.
The Guild and its members have played a significant role in economic development, new product and construction standards, enhanced safety policies and increased energy efficiency of masonry products.
